Warm weather ahead, environmental conditions, and COVID-19 vaccination coverage could bring the pandemic to an end by the summer, the director of the Institute of Public Health Igor Galic said. He also believes that the virus will most likely get an endemic character.
During the TVCG morning program, he said that everyone, especially the health workers, wanted the pandemic to end, but that we have to be careful.
„Our data show that in the last five weeks we have a decline in the number of patients, although the wave in the first week of January was obviously the peak of the disease,“ Galic said.
He added that Montenegro has about 55 % less new cases and four percent less deaths compared to the previous two weeks: „The hospitalizations number is also decreasing. Field data show that the primary health sector has fewer visits.“
However, as he said, we should not relax, since various mutations of the virus occur.
„Vaccination levels which could guarantee that there will be no new mutations, and thus no new strains, have not been reached worldwide. The good thing is the weather is warm, so we expect environmental conditions, vaccination coverage and all other characteristics would contribute the pandemic to end by the summer, “ Galic said.
